Steve Johnson Racing to Present BAT-man Scholarship at Lawson State Community College

Birmingham, AL (02/01/2024) — BIRMINGHAM, AL - On February 6, 2024, NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Racer and team owner Steve Johnson will visit Lawson State Community College to present one of his 2024 BAT-man (Be A Technician) Scholarships. The winning student will receive $4,000 in Snap-on tools to jumpstart his or her career in the automotive industry. The award will come in the form of a Snap-on mechanic's cart of tools valued at over $3,000, plus a $1,000 Peak Performer Bonus that will allow the winner to select specific tools needed in their specialty.

The BAT-man Scholarship is a national program made possible by the support of partners like Peak Automotive, Snap-on Tools, and Market Scan, who understand the value of using motorsports to promote skilled trades. Scholarship applications are accepted year-round at www.SteveJohnsonRacing.com. The application consists of just 5 short questions, and finalists are later asked to submit a brief video.

Before making the scholarship award, Steve will give a presentation entitled "Marketing Your Brand After the Diploma" to all students in the Alabama Center for Automotive Excellence program at Lawson State. He will encourage students to identify their passions and seek out the resources to build a career path around doing what they love, similar to what Steve has done in his racing career. BAT-man scholarships have been awarded in Wyoming, Texas, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, but this particular presentation really hits home because Steve Johnson Racing is headquartered just down the road in Irondale, Alabama. Lawson State is the only community college in the State of Alabama to offer manufacturer specific career programs with Ford, Toyota, and General Motors. While earning their certifications, students rotate between on-campus instruction and paid on-the-job work through sponsoring dealerships.

"We're ready to surprise the winner, and hopefully inspire others in the classes to look for opportunities like the BAT-man Scholarship," stated Steve Johnson. "With the help of school leadership and instructors, as well as the ASE Education Foundation and industry partners, we've put together a great program for these young people that should help them to think about their careers, their purpose, and what it means to win at life."

"Automotive technicians have a great opportunity to build a reliable, high-paying career in today's workforce," stated Alan Halbert, coordinator of the Ford ASSET program at Lawson State. "Our job is to make sure that our students are prepared with the skills and tools they need to be successful, and it means a lot to have a someone like Steve Johnson come to share his time and resources with our students."
