Lawson State Community College Participates in "Operation We Remember"
Birmingham, AL (09/13/2023) — (September 13, 2023) Students, faculty and staff of Lawson State Community College all joined together to pause and reflect on the 143 veterans who lost their lives to suicide in 2021. This was done as a part of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs campaign, that takes place statewide during the month of September, which is National Suicide Prevention Awareness month. To remember the veterans, 143 American Flags were placed on the front lawns of the Birmingham and Bessemer Campuses of Lawson State this week.
Several speakers shared the significance of what was being done and why it is so important to take care of your mental health. On this occasion, there was also reflection on the 9-11 attacks and how that day changed America forever. Operation We Remember, is a powerful visual reminder of those who lost their lives to suicide, and the work that is greatly needed to prevent more deaths in the future.
