ASHLEY M. JONES, ALABAMA POET LAUREATE, TO GIVE A PRESENTATION TO THE LAWSON STATE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2022
Birmingham, AL (05/10/2022) — Lawson State Community College will confer degrees and certificates on approximately 174 of more than 255 students who have met eligibility requirements for completion on Friday, May 13, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in the Arthur Shores Fine Arts Building in the Gymnasium on the Birmingham West Campus of Lawson State Community College located at 3060 Wilson Road S.W., Birmingham, AL 35221.
Ashley M. Jones, who was announced this past fall as the poet laureate for the State of Alabama from 2022-2026, will address the graduating Class of 2022 and guests at Lawson State's Annual Spring Commencement Exercises with a presentation.
Jones is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and the first African American person and youngest person, appointed at the age of 31, to hold the title of poet laureate for the state. She received an MFA in Poetry from Florida International University (FIU), where she was a John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Fellow. Her collection of poetry, "Magic City Gospel", was published in 2017 and awarded the silver medal for the 2017 Independent Publishers Book Award in Poetry.
She served as Official Poet for the City of Sunrise, Florida's Little Free Libraries Initiative from 2013-2015, and her work was recognized in the 2014 Poets and Writers Maureen Egen Writer's Exchange Contest and the 2015 Academy of American Poets Contest at FIU.
Each candidate for graduation will be permitted tickets for guests to attend. There will not be a general admission to the public for this event.
