Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony Named the 2022 Recipient of the Charles A. Long Outstanding Civic Award

Birmingham, AL (02/03/2022) — Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony, president of Lawson State Community College, has been named the 2022 recipient of the Charles A. Long Outstanding Civic Award given by the Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Anthony accepted the award during the Centennial Meeting of the Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce held Thursday, February 3, 2022. Her career with the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) began in the City of Bessemer, first at Bessemer State Technical College and then after the merger of the college with Lawson State in 2005.
With over 30 years in the ACCS, Anthony has held many roles including assistant dean, dean of students, executive vice president, interim president, and now president. During the awards presentation, she was acknowledged for "being a voice for those in need-acting as an advocate to aid in the personal development of those seeking betterment."
"Sometimes you have to step out and stand out on the things that you believe in to make sure you're carrying forth the mission for which you were sent here, and that's what I try to do on a daily basis," Dr. Anthony remarked during her award acceptance. "Thank you to the City of Bessemer. Thank you to the committee. I am honored and humbled by your presentation of this award."
Recognized as one "known to demonstrate awareness, compassion, and spirit," and for her need to help others, Dr. Anthony has given her time to many professional, community, civil, and volunteer service organizations. She has most recently served as part of the Family Guidance Center, the Youth Leadership Development Program, and as part of the Boys Scouts of America- serving as the 2022 Event Chairmen of the Community Leadership Breakfast for the Cherokee District (Greater Alabama Council).
A proud native of Bessemer, Dr. Anthony earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Talladega College. She received both her Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership and a Master of Education degree in Counseling from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She completed her Doctorate in Educational Leadership through a joint program at UAB and The University of Alabama.
The Charles A. Long Outstanding Civic Award has been presented since 1965 and is awarded to a deserving person who has served the community in the tradition of Mr. Long who was a devoted business and civic leader.
