Lawson State Community College Awards Scholarship from the Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation

Birmingham, AL (01/13/2022) — Administrators at Lawson State Community College are excited to announce a scholarship presented to the college by the Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation that was awarded to two deserving students.

The Foundation reached out to the college in 2021 to award the first year of two, two-year scholarships of $3,000 each to the institution, and the college named Janessa Nalls and Sara Eaton as the scholarship's inaugural recipients. The criteria is outlined as follows: one general scholarship and one scholarship to be presented to a physically challenged/mobility-impaired or re-entry student.

Both Ms. Nalls and Ms. Eaton were determined to have met the scholarship criteria and were awarded $1,500 for the fall semester with another $1,500 award to be placed on their spring 2022 accounts.

About the recipients of the Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation Scholarship

Janessa Nalls is a third semester, first-generation student studying Diagnostic Medical Sonography. She has earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is a working, single parent who returned to college and anticipates graduating in Spring 2023. After graduation, she wants to begin a career as medical sonographer, specializing in neuro-sonography.

Sara Eaton is a second semester student studying social work with a 3.7 grade point average. Ms. Eaton is a traditional age student who plans to complete her degree and transfer to a four-year college. She ultimately wishes to work with women who have been affected by domestic violence.

About the Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation

Dr. Maya Angelou was a groundbreaking poet, author, and civil rights activist known around the world. In 2011, Dr. Angelou created The Foundation to serve as the dynamic personification of her philanthropic legacy and lifelong mission to support educational excellence and healthcare equity initiatives for all.
