Lawson State Community College Celebrated Fall 2022 Graduates During Annual Commencement
Birmingham, AL (12/16/2022) — Today, Lawson State Community College celebrated the graduating Class of 2022 during the college's Annual Fall Commencement Exercises with a presentation in the Arthur Shores Fine Arts Gymnasium on the Birmingham West Campus of Lawson State Community College.
For this commencement, a special presentation was made by world-renowned artist and Birmingham native, Steve Skipper, where he gifted artwork celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and the crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma entitled The DNA Ingrained. The college is one of three entities chosen to receive the work.
"In my heart, after meeting Dr. [Cynthia] Anthony and gracing this great campus, I talked to Ambassador [Andrew] Youngbragging on the spirit of Lawson State Community College. And I implored him that a print of the painting needed to be at Lawson State Community College," said Skipper, who donated the print in memory of his cousin, Linda Henderson Jones, a Lawson State graduate.
The print is signed by Civil Rights Movement leaders Minister Joseph Lowery, Dr. C.T. Vivian, Congressman John Lewis, and Ambassador Andrew. J. Young.
"Mr. Skipper, we graciously and gratefully accept this amazing and profoundly significant gift," said Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony, president of Lawson State Community College who presented Skipper with the Lawson State Community College Meritorious Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions and achievements in the arts.
Lafayette, Louisiana native, Talor Wolfe offered words on behalf of the Fall Class of 2022. "As we begin this next chapter in our lives, I would like to leave you with this thought: Live by faith and make sure that the choices you make are reflective of the direction of your dreams."
Lawson State conferred degrees and certificates on approximately 113 of more than 131 students who met eligibility requirements for completion.
